Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care:
    • Assist in Treatment: Implement treatment plans designed by physical therapists to improve patient mobility, relieve pain, and enhance physical function.
    • Therapeutic Exercises: Guide patients through exercises to regain strength, flexibility, and balance.
    • Use of Modalities: Apply heat, ice, electrical stimulation, or ultrasound therapy as directed by the physical therapist.
  2. Patient Monitoring:
    • Track Progress: Monitor and document patient progress during therapy sessions and report any changes to the supervising physical therapist.
    • Adjust Treatment: Assist in modifying treatment plans based on patient progress and feedback.
  3. Patient Education:
    • Instruct Patients: Teach patients how to perform exercises and use assistive devices, such as crutches or walkers, properly and safely.
    • Home Exercise Programs: Educate patients and caregivers on exercises or therapies to continue at home to promote recovery.
  4. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain Records: Document patient treatments, progress, and responses in the patient’s medical records, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
    • Communicate with the Team: Collaborate with physical therapists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care.
  5. Patient Preparation:
    • Set Up Equipment: Prepare treatment areas and equipment needed for therapy sessions.
    • Prepare Patients: Help patients get ready for therapy, ensuring they are comfortable and positioned correctly.
  6. Administrative Duties:
    • Scheduling: Assist in scheduling patient appointments and follow-ups as needed.
    • Billing Support: Assist with insurance documentation or billing tasks related to the services provided.

Skills and Competencies:

  1. Clinical Skills:
    • Knowledge of Therapeutic Techniques: Familiarity with exercises, stretching, and manual therapy techniques.
    • Use of Therapy Equipment: Experience with therapy equipment such as treadmills, exercise bikes, resistance bands, and ultrasound machines.
    • Patient Assessment: Ability to observe patients and recognize changes in physical conditions that may need to be addressed by the supervising physical therapist.

Educational Requirements:

  • Degree: An associate degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program.
  • Licensure/Certification: PTAs must pass the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for PTAs and meet state licensure requirements.
